Have a #GRONKING Memorial Day!

If only it really did make explosion sounds when he spiked it.

Foray into Cooking 1

Technically, this is not the first dinner I’ve cooked this summer. Two weeks ago I made pasta with roasted chicken and strawberry shortcakes. Nothing about that dinner was too out of my comfort zone, so I’m not really going to count it. This week, however, I went out of that comfort zone. I made a tomato, goat cheese, and onion tart. It was amazing. Turned out really fantastic, and I think if I were to use pizza dough instead of puff pastry dough, it’d make a pretty damn good pizza. You can find the recipe here: http://www.kayotic.nl/blog/tomato-goat-cheese-onion-tart It’s really easy to make.

The main event for tonight was tilapia with a purple potato crust and a chive rosemary oil. To begin with, I could not find purple potatoes, so I went with red ones. They were a fine substitute. On the Food Network website, this is rated as difficult. I couldn’t quite understand why because it’s a pretty simple recipe. Once I started cooking, I realized why it’s so goddamn difficult. This recipe requires the chef to break the laws of physics. You put the potatoes on the tilapia like they’re shingles, and then you’re supposed to put the tilapia in a pan, potato side down. How the fuck are the potatoes supposed to magically stay on the goddamn fish? They don’t stick to it. In fact, putting the fish in the pan and removing it required more difficult maneuvers than connecting a capsule to the International Space Station. I’d also like to add that in recipes that require two different uses for olive oil, that you specify the goddamn amount of olive oil one is supposed to use at a certain point in time rather than saying one is olive oil and the other is extra virgin olive oil.

Despite all the difficulties, I managed to cook the tilapia the right way. The chive rosemary oil is really simple, but good. Everyone liked the fish. Except for me. I realized that I don’t really like tilapia cooked this way. Also, it was pretty oily, but through no fault of my own. No, I’d like to blame Giada for that one. See, Giada is a lying asshole who doesn’t seem to understand the laws of physics, nor does she seem to realize that it’s helpful to tell the chef which amount of olive oil to use at which time.

Needless to say, I was pretty frustrated and unhappy that after working really hard to make it, I didn’t like my food. Fortunately, I drowned my sorrows in Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Therapy, which certainly lives up to its name. It’s rich and amazing.

If anybody wants to try Giada’s fish recipe, here it is: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/tilapia-with-purple-potato-crust-and-chive-rosemary-oil-recipe/index.html

Hopefully, next week’s meal will be better. I’m making herb chicken sliders with a raspberry mustard and baked french fries. I’ll also try to post photos of it. I didn’t this week because the tilapia sort of broke apart when I was trying to deny the existence of gravity in removing the fish from the skillet.

Fucking Giada…

What the fuck?

Not that I’m late to the show here, but I just can’t stand it anymore. I just don’t fucking get why gay marriage is a political issue. The only arguments against it are unconstitutional and wrong (the Bible argument) or completely irrational (it’ll lead to people having 20 wives or fucking turtles). How is this still going on? It’s pretty much the same thing we did to African Americans as far as denying a group of people civil rights, yet nobody really seems to recognize this. Come the fuck on, America. You’re better than this. At least Obama said he was for it. That’s probably a big step in the right direction.

Plans for the Summer

So, as promised, here are my general plans for the summer.

Reading List

  • Finish The Magic Barrel
  • Running the Books
  • The Hunger Games
  • Hopefully some kind of psychology book
  • Finish other books I started last semester
  • “The Grey”
  • Other suggestions?

Food

  • Eat healthier
  • Learn to like fish
  • Learn to cook a lot more stuff
  • Try to cook often
  • Cook a really fancy meal, like super fancy
  • Recipe suggestions?

Exercise

  • Exercise everyday
  • Be able to do a reasonable amount of push-ups, pull-ups, curls, and such
  • Be able to use the rowing machine for at least 30 minutes
  • Go running more often
  • Figure out if my tachycardia gets worse with exercise

And, of course, other things as they crop up over the summer. Hopefully I’ll be going on a couple trips and doing some other fun things like that. If things go as planned, it’ll be a great summer. If not, I’m sure it’ll still be pretty fun.

So, here’s the general plan for my day, in case anybody is interested.

Go to Stereotyping, learn about how people are really shitty to other people

Hopefully go to the Green Cart Deli

Give a presentation to my class, in which I basically bash an album I had to listen to and explain why I only liked about three songs on it

Write a paper for Dr. Stuber

Assuming I finish at a reasonable time, do whatever the hell I want

I assume dinner will be in here somewhere, but it’ll definitely happen.

Soon, I’m going to post some goals I have for the summer, so be sure to keep an eye out for that.

That’s intense.
